- The factory power take off unit (PTU) on certain Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles often fails when extreme temperatures overheat the internal lubricant. The heat can cause catastrophic damage so severe that it becomes nearly impossible to salvage and rebuild the PTU assembly. In extreme cold conditions, the factory seals can fail and cause oil to leak from the unit. Common symptoms of these problems can include a metallic rattling sound and/or an unusual, natural gas-like scent from beneath the vehicle. This patented, 100-percent newly manufactured Dorman OE FIX PTU has been redesigned for greater resilience during thermal extremes, and features an added heatshield to reduce internal temperatures as well as a drain plug to allow easy replacement of the gearbox lubricant. Upgraded seals also help prevent premature degradation in extreme cold temperatures, providing an all-around more reliable replacement. For vehicle owners, that means a more permanent replacement.
