- This book will teach you the easiest way to read and write sheet music for the Native American (style) flute. After teaching flute classes for several years, Elaine McDonald created this book to help her students learn the number tab notation system for the Native American (style) flute. This notation system, developed by Scott August, uses a specific number to represent the fingering of each note on the flute's scale. The number tab system has several advantages over other notation systems for the Native American (style) flute. It can be learned quickly, and once you learn it you'll find it easier to read than finger hole diagrams or Nakai tab. Also, jotting down your own melodies is much quicker and easier with number tab. Because number tab itself does not show the rhythm of the notes, the author of this book created a rhythm marking system to be used with number tab. This book will teach you both number tab and the rhythm markings. The book contains fingering charts and 42 songs that are systematically arranged to help you learn. The songs include a number of traditional Native American melodies, as well as many well-known tunes like Red River Valley, How Great Thou Art, and America the Beautiful. If any song in the book is unfamiliar to you, you can listen to it on a YouTube playlist that was created especially for users of this book. Page 5 of the book gives you easy directions for finding the playlist on YouTube. NOTE: The phrase "Native American Flute" in the title of this book is intended to refer to both a genuine "Native American flute" (made by an enrolled member of a tribe) and a "Native American style flute" (made by someone who is not an enrolled tribe member). The songs in this book can, of course, be played on either type of 6-holed flute.
