- These writings cover the last 20 months that I was a member of the United States Armed Forces. I was an Army National Guard infantry officer preparing to deploy to Afghanistan. My intention was to continue on the Special Force Qualifications course and become Army Green Beret. In civilian life I was businessman with a fledging umbrella corporation that consisted of several construction companies, a real estate brokerage firm, and an investment management company. I deployed, I left my company leaderless at the worst possible time, several months after the housing bubble burst, when the overall economy had collapsed. I left my wife who was pregnant, carrying a child the doctors said wouldn’t live past a month due to an in utero stroke, and I had no money in my business or personal accounts. In Infantry Officer Basic School we are taught that a mission can have only one task and one purpose. I chose to test this doctrine with the following results.
